What is the definition of occupational health?

Occupational health refers to the identification and control of the risks arising from physical, chemical, and other workplace hazards in order to establish and maintain a safe and healthy working environment.

Is Occupational Health confidential?

The service is medically confidential. Any information obtained by the occupational health doctor or nurse is strictly confidential to OH. No information is divulged to any third party, including the person’s general practitioner (GP) without the person’s informed consent.

Is occupational health a legal requirement?

Every employer must provide a safe workplace and must assess risk at work. Many employers consider that they meet their legal requirements by having a safety policy and a health and safety officer. However, no single person could have the combination of skills necessary to provide the kind of service required by law.

Can an employer ask for a medical diagnosis?

No, it is not legally required that an employer know an employee’s diagnosis. It is sufficient for your doctor to provide a note informing them you are ill, what your limitations are because of your illness and, if necessary, require an accommodation to enable you to perform the essential functions of your job.

How long does occupational health assessment take?

An initial conversation with a consultant can take up to 45 minutes. At this point, they’ll collect all the relevant information needed to give an informed opinion. There’ll also be a review at the end of the initial consultation that’ll need an extra 30 minutes.

If I divulge confidential health information to the OH doctor or nurse, will my manager be informed?

No, definitely not.

What is the main focus of occupational health?

Occupational health should aim at the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations. The prevention amongst workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions and the protection of workers in their employment.

Can you refuse to go to occupational health?

Of course, an employee always has the right to refuse to attend an occupational health assessment or other health meeting. This refusal may have to do with personal beliefs, fear of sharing medical details or religious reasons, and should be documented clearly.
